What Is an NDIS Independent Living Option (ILO)?
An independent living option is NDIS-funded support that enables a participant to design and access a personalised, home-based living arrangement. Unlike traditional accommodation supports, ILO does not purchase or provide housing — it funds the support structures that make a participant’s chosen way of living possible, practical, and sustainable over time. ILO sits within the Core Supports budget under Home and Living (stated support) in a participant’s NDIS plan.
The critical principle behind every independent living option is self-direction. Participants are not allocated to an existing arrangement. They start with their own vision — where they want to live, who they want around them, what kind of support feels right — and then work with an ILO provider like Innovative Disability to make that vision a reality. ILO can blend formal paid support with informal support from family, friends, and community, creating a genuinely integrated support network rather than a purely professional one.

Ways to Live — Independent Living Option Arrangements
Support workers visit at agreed times for specific tasks. The participant maintains complete privacy and self-direction; support adapts around their schedule.
The participant lives within a carefully matched host family's home. Personality, lifestyle, and communication compatibility drive the matching process — belonging and security, without group-home formality.
A paid support person lives in or adjacent to the participant's home, providing consistent, close-at-hand support while the participant retains ownership and control of their own environment.
The Independent Living Option Process — Stage 1 and Stage 2
Stage 1 — Exploration and Design (Up to 100 Funded Hours)
Funded by the NDIS in bands of 30, 50, or 100 hours. Covers goal exploration, living arrangement identification, stakeholder consultation, risk assessment, and preparation of the Service Proposal for NDIA submission. Can be self-, plan-, or NDIA-managed.
Stage 2 — Implementation, Monitoring & Review
Covers delivery of all agreed paid supports, maintenance of participant/provider/host-housemate agreements, and regular monitoring check-ins. A formal monitoring plan is required. Innovative Disability stays actively involved throughout, adjusting the arrangement as needs evolve.
